CSA Outreach Task 2

Project 2. Overlay the image with various line maps, including municipal boundaries, major roads and streams and, if it is feasible, to add highway numbers and stream names.

Having prepared a RGB image using Manifold, it is now possible to down load vector information from http://www.geobase.ca/. These are in the form of shape files (roads, etc) can be down-loaded from GeoGratis at no cost and/or from the NTDB for a price.

The National Road Network can be downloaded from GeoGratis for free and overlaid on Landsat image with reasonable accuracy. However, the Administrative Boundaries on GeoGratis do not include municipal boundaries, and the Hydrography (streams and lakes) on GeoGratis has been derived from the Digital Map of the World and are offered at 1:1,000,000. There can be up to 1 km displacement of the streams on GeoGratis with respect to their position on the Landsat image.

It is anticipated that catchment area boundaries will be added to the hydrographic files on the NTDB over the next five years. In the meantime, watershed managers can often obtain these boundaries from provincial representatives on the management boards.
