What is Remote Sensing?

Remote sensing (or Earth Observation) is the process of mapping and measuring from a distance, and without contact. It is often the best way to get the ‘big picture’, especially of distant, large or inaccessible areas.

Using satellite data, we can provide synoptic, wide area coverage on a more or less regular basis, of remote areas that are often not accessible by other means. Using global satellite data archives of repeated imagery, we can provide wide-area time series supporting change analysis for time series starting as far back as 1972.

With airborne sensors we can provide very detailed mapping timed to match tidal, weather, biological or other events. The pattern information in image maps can provide the context of in situ observations, and often reveals valuable insights into processes not available otherwise.
